Ideal Modern Home in the Heart of Ojochal

When we bought this amazing property in 2010, it was the pool, the tropical garden, the beaches, the tight-knit community and the convenience of being walking distance to things like the library and grocery store that had us most excited. The house was the perfect size, clean, modern, with everything we’d need, so that part was a no-brainer. Still, we didn’t know what to expect from this leap into the world of Costa Rican home ownership. We didn’t know that the kids would be snorkelling with the tadpoles in the creek, or raising money by selling coconuts for the tiny library, or learning about butterflies and turtles from the turtle reserve’s biologist, or skyping their classes at home from the boutique hotel across the road. We didn’t know it would break our hearts to sell the oldest, moldiest, most unreliable car we’d ever owned. Or that we could eat rice and beans every day and never get sick of it. Discovering world-class restaurants and stunning ocean vistas from the homes of new friends, exploring caves and waterfalls we had never known existed, meeting the local residents and developing close friendships with some incredible Costa Rican families, none of that could have been foreseen. The other thing we didn’t predict was that six years later, our oldest would be so enthralled and committed to high school that she didn’t want to miss ANY of it. So instead of spending 6 more years of enjoying the property for just 3 weeks per year (being in real estate in a northern beach community means I don’t get summers off) and having no desire to rent it out, we are offering this gem of a house and garden for sale. We still love the area and hope to retire here. Who knows, maybe by then, the new owners will be in a life transition as well, and want to sell it back to us! I’m used to explaining to clients how we want to capture the home in its best light and Mary is used to advising clients to remove personal items so that potential buyers can see themselves in the home, without distractions. But this time it’s personal. And when it’s a vacation or retirement home, stripping the story from the property would be doing a disservice to the new owner. So please, pardon the people in the sunset photos, the grinning faces in the pool, the hands holding the baby turtles and hermit crabs. Look past the distractions of guests in hammocks and Christmas stockings on interior pillars. Put yourself in those scenes, dream a little, could this be your place? Just imagine. The sun has set, you’re back from the beach and sparking up the BBQ. The kids are rinsing their boogie boards in the outdoor shower and the conversation turns to those clouds rolling in. A rare sight this time of year. You hear them before you feel them – bodacious raindrops that sound like tropical music on the metal roof. The tree frogs join the chorus and the downpour invites everyone to jump in the pool. You’re wet anyway and you’re not cold, nope, one is never ever cold in the South Pacific. The heavenly tap turns off just as quickly as it opened, the clouds dissipate, revealing the starriest sky you can imagine. The only distraction from the awesome skies are the blinking of the fireflies and the growling starting in your stomach…. Grab a plate and belly up to the bar, folks, this one’s a real treat.
